Text messaging is switched off until you are approved
New accounts start with text messaging turned off. You need to finish Phone Registration and wait for the mobile carriers to approve your business before Joby will send any text message — one-off replies, marketing blasts, or automatic job updates.
What it is
Phone Registration is a short form that tells the US mobile carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and the rest) who your business is and what kind of texts you send. The industry name for it is A2P 10DLC — it simply means "a business texting from a normal 10-digit phone number."
The carriers require this for every business that texts customers. Without it, your messages get filtered, slowed down, or dropped, and your phone numbers can be suspended. Joby handles the paperwork behind the scenes — you only enter facts about your business.
Joby writes the carrier-facing wording for you. The registration is always submitted as a low-volume, service-updates registration, which is the type most likely to be approved for a small service business.
When to use it
- You just opened your Joby account and want to text customers.
- You see the orange SMS is paused strip across the top of the app.
- A text message failed with the error "SMS sending is disabled. Complete Phone Registration in Settings to enable."
- The SMS checkbox is locked when you set up how a field worker gets notified.
- Your registration came back declined and you need to fix it and send it again.
You do not need this for phone calls. Calling, call recording, and voicemail all work without registration — this only controls text messaging.
Before you start
A paid plan
Phone Registration is a paid feature. On a free or trial account the page shows an Upgrade to Paid Plan button instead of the form.
Owner or admin access
Only account owners and admins can open Settings and complete the registration.
Your official business paperwork
Legal business name, business type, your 9-digit EIN / Tax ID, and the business street address exactly as they appear on your tax filing.
A name, phone, and address you can stand behind
Joby publishes a small public page for reviewers using these details. If they do not match, the carriers usually decline.
Set aside about five minutes. Joby pre-fills most of the first step from the company details already saved on your account, so you are mainly checking and correcting.
Step-by-step
Go to Settings›Channels›Phone Registration. The wizard has three steps, listed down the left side of the page: Business details, SMS purpose, and Carrier review. You can click Save Draft at any point and come back later.
Step 1 — Business details
This screen is titled Business verification and is split into four boxes. Fields marked with an asterisk are required.
- Business identity — Legal Business Name, DBA Name (optional), Business Type (Corporation, Limited Liability Corporation, Sole Proprietorship, and so on), EIN / Tax ID, and Industry.
- Business address — Street Address, City, State, Zip Code, and Country.
- Authorized representative — First Name, Last Name, and Job Level (CEO, CFO, VP, GM, Director, General Counsel, or Other). Job Title is optional. This is the person at your company who can confirm the business is real.
- Customer support contact — Support Phone. That is the only contact field you fill in; Joby routes the reviewers' emails to its own compliance team so you are not dragged into a back-and-forth.
If what you typed differs from the name, phone, or address on your public business page, an amber notice appears with a Sync public details from this form button. Clicking it updates your public page to match. Then click Next.
When you click Next, Joby builds a public page for your business — a contact and text sign-up page plus a privacy policy and terms. Reviewers visit it to confirm your customers really agree to receive texts. This takes a few seconds, so the Next button spins briefly.
Step 2 — SMS purpose
This screen is titled Campaign Details. Joby fills in the wording for you automatically the first time you land here, so in most cases you can read it over and move on.
- Use Case, Message Type, and Monthly Volume are shown but cannot be changed. They are always Low Volume, Transactional, and Less than 1,000 — the combination with the best approval odds.
- Campaign Description — an explanation of who you are and what texts you send. It must be at least 40 characters (up to 4,096).
- Public SMS Registration Page — a link to the page Joby just created. Click it to see what reviewers will see.
- How do customers opt in? — a description of how customers agree to receive texts. Also at least 40 characters.
- Consent checkbox — you must tick "I confirm that all message recipients have explicitly opted in to receive SMS messages."
- Sample Messages — at least 2 real examples, up to 5. Use Add Sample to add more, or the trash icon to remove one.
Generate with AI
The button at the top right of this step writes the description, the opt-in wording, and the sample messages for your business in one go. Once there is text on the page it changes to Regenerate with AI. You can edit anything it produces before moving on.
You do not fill in anything for STOP or HELP replies. Joby submits standard opt-out and help wording on your behalf, which is what the Compliance Handling box on this step is telling you.
Step 3 — Carrier review
This screen is titled Review & Submit and shows a read-only summary of your business details on the left and your messaging summary on the right. Joby re-checks everything as soon as you arrive.
- Read the summary and confirm the business facts are correct.
- Click Submit Registration. The button stays greyed out until every check passes.
- If your public page details still do not match, a pop-up asks whether to update the public page first. Click OK to sync, or Cancel to submit as-is.
- A progress window appears and works through five stages — setting up messaging, verifying business details, registering your brand, configuring compliance, and finalizing. Leave the tab open until it closes.
If something is missing, Joby shows a red pop-up naming the first field to fix and keeps you on the current step.
How to check it worked
- Reopen Settings›Channels›Phone Registration. A coloured banner at the top shows your status: Draft, Submitting…, In Review, Approved, Rejected, or Failed.
- While it is In Review the banner also shows two progress dots — Business Verification and SMS Compliance. Green means that half is done.
- Click Check Status next to "Your registration is being processed" to pull the latest answer immediately.
- When it is approved the page shows a Registration Complete box with your approval date and the reference codes for your registration.
- The orange SMS is paused strip at the top of the app disappears, and sending a test text from Conversations goes through.
Joby re-checks pending registrations for you in the background, roughly every ten minutes per account. When approval arrives, text messaging switches on by itself — you do not have to click anything.
Review usually takes a few business days and can occasionally stretch to a few weeks. The banner in the app gives the current estimate.
Common mistakes
Business name does not match the tax records
The Legal Business Name and address must match your IRS and state registration exactly. A trading name belongs in the DBA Name field, not the legal name field.
EIN entered with the wrong number of digits
It must be exactly 9 digits. Joby shows a red warning under the field the moment it is not.
Public page details left out of sync
If your public page shows a different name, phone, or address, reviewers often decline. Use Sync public details from this form, or click OK on the pop-up at submit time.
Vague sample messages
"Hello, thank you" will be rejected. Use real examples that name your business and describe a real job update, such as an arrival window or an appointment reminder.
Description or opt-in wording too short
Both need at least 40 characters. The character counter under each box turns red when you are short.
Registering a brand-new business straight away
If you registered your company very recently, the carrier records may not list it yet. Wait a few days and submit again.
Closing the tab mid-submission
Wait for the progress window to finish. Use Save Draft if you need to step away before submitting.

What the statuses mean
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Not Started | You have not opened the form yet. |
| Draft | You saved a partly filled form. Nothing has been sent. |
| Submitting… | Joby is sending your details right now. Leave the page open. |
| In Review | With the mobile carriers. Usually a few business days, sometimes a few weeks. |
| Approved | Done — text messaging is switched on for your account. |
| Rejected | Declined. The banner lists the reason and what to fix. |
| Failed | Something went wrong while submitting. Fix and try again. |
What happens while texting is off
- Individual texts — sending from Conversations or a lead fails with "SMS sending is disabled. Complete Phone Registration in Settings to enable."
- Bulk SMS campaigns — starting or resuming a campaign is blocked with the same message.
- Field worker notifications — the SMS checkbox shows a padlock. Ticking it opens a "Finish phone registration to send SMS" pop-up with a Start phone registration button. Use Email or In-app in the meantime.
- Automatic job updates — any automation that texts a customer will not send.
Account owners also see a coloured strip across the top of the app a few minutes after signing in, with a Complete setup button that jumps straight to the form. Dismissing it with the X hides it for the rest of the day; after three separate days of dismissing it, it stops appearing altogether.
After approval
- Text messaging switches on automatically — there is nothing to turn on yourself.
- The page shows a green Approved banner and a Registration Complete box with your approval date.
- Individual texts, Bulk SMS, field worker notifications, and automations all work normally.
- Every phone number you own now — and every number you buy later — is added to your approved registration automatically. You never have to register a number by hand.
- The wizard becomes read-only, so approved details cannot be edited by accident.
If you are declined
- Open Settings›Channels›Phone Registration. The red banner shows the reason plus a What to fix list written for your specific situation.
- Work through that list — it usually points at the EIN, the business name and address, or the sample messages.
- Correct the fields in the wizard. It becomes editable again once a registration is declined.
- Use Regenerate with AI on the SMS purpose step if the wording was the problem.
- Click Submit Registration again to start a fresh review.
If your business passed but only the messaging part was declined, you do not start over. Fix the messaging details and resubmit — your approved business record is reused, and the banner tells you when this applies.
For Joby super admins
Super admins can watch every account's progress from Phone Registration in the admin sidebar. The page is headed Phone Registration Compliance and shows:
- Counter cards for Not Started, Draft, In Review, Approved, and Rejected.
- Filter buttons: All, Not Started, Draft, In Review, Approved, Rejected.
- A table of every organization with its owner, four progress columns, whether texting is switched on, and the submission date. Hovering a progress cell reveals the decline reason where there is one.
- A refresh icon on each row to re-check that one account, and a Sync All Pending button at the top right to re-check every account that is not yet finished.
Accounts from before this feature
Organizations that were already texting before Phone Registration was introduced had texting left switched on so nothing broke. Completing the registration is still strongly recommended — it is what stops the carriers from filtering your messages or suspending your numbers.
